The holidays are upon us, how exciting!  I just love the hustle and bustle, the thoughtful gifts I get to give, and the all round happiness of the season.  Do you feel sometimes, though, that it gets too busy?  Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed, and perhaps do not get to complete all of the items on your to do list?  Sometimes even decorating the home can seem daunting, but you know it needs to get done!  I simply love the decorating part of the season and cannot wait to put up all of my darling decorations.

If you need a bit of inspiration on holiday decorations, please read on for my 5 decorating tips!

  1. Use what you already have.

Go through all of your existing decorations and choose your favourites.  I am sure that you will realize that your decor shopping list may be smaller than you think after going through all the great items you have purchased in the past.  Also, you can choose items based on your current decor. For example, choose the pieces that will fit nicely into your home, as is, like eucalyptus, gum nut, ivy and red berry stems and white vases.  Once you have chosen your favourites, it will be easier to know what kind of additions you can purchase – if you need to at all!

  1. DIY

You know me, I am the Do It Yourself Queen!  I love making unique pieces, like painting and stenciling cushion covers with my Blake & Taylor Furniture Chalk Paint (see how here) .  How adorable would a mistletoe stencil be on your couch cushions?  Another easy DIY piece is a glass vase filled with ornaments that are extra from decorating your tree.  So many possibilities.

  1. Scented candles

There is nothing quite like a lovely smell in your home that can bring back so many memories and joy.   With so many scents to choose from, you can have anything from fresh baked apple pie to earthy pine!  Candles are a perfect way to add to the joyous feeling in your decorated home, and they look marvelous flickering away on the mantle or window sill.

  1. Garlands, Garlands Everywhere

Garlands of any kind are a great way to save space on surfaces, while still adding that holiday touch.  Drape garlands off light fixtures (safely), around clocks, on the mantle or anywhere they fit.  Of course, try and keep the colours consistent and matching.

  1. Wreaths

Wreaths are my favourite!  One beautiful wreath on your front door can set the whole tone and just feel so welcoming. We have a great one in our store.

Happy decorating!
