Everything Is Better When It Is Vintage!

Ok, I must digress, not absolutely EVERYTHING is better when it is vintage.  I much prefer my smartphone to the twist-it-all-the-way-around rotary dial of my youth.  Though, to be fair, it did help me practice my memorization skills. Many things that were fashioned in the past give me great excitement.  The love and care infused into each item is second only to something that has been hand-made.  Both of which I have in spades at the Blake & Taylor shop! It is as if these items are filled to the brim with the very appreciation of time that went into [...]

Chair Makeover

Here is the next project that has arrived on my design bench, a chair makeover! You might not believe it, but this fabulous chair frame is not an antique! The gorgeous wooden frame with beautifully carved floral detail was designed and crafted overseas.  This chair was commissioned by one of my client's for their bedroom (another project that I am involved with for this clients bedroom - see On my Design Bench' 8 January 2019.)Yes, you all know how enamored I am with antiques; how I like to imagine the stories that weathered old items would tell.  However, in this [...]

On My Design Bench: Soft Furnishings

This week on the design bench, my first project was to create some lovely soft furnishings for this bedroom.  I designed and installed this blue and white embroidered pattern set of bed pillows, drum shades and bed runner to make the bed pop.  To finish off I designed the bench seat cushion using navy and white ticking fabric and plain navy cushions with the same navy and white ticking for the piping to create a sense of drama in a room that was very plain. I really love how it ties in so well with the dark wood accents, and [...]

Stencil a Cushion Cover Using Blake & Taylor Chalk Furniture Paint

Stencils are an easy way to spruce up a blank space on any surface.  They offer crisp lines and there are so many different stencils to choose from.  Today we chose to stencil a cushion cover with a beautiful 'Paris' stencil using the Blake & Taylor Chalk Furniture Paint. How to Block Print a Cushion Cover

I am always on the look out for beautiful wooden blocks at craft fairs and flea markets and I have built up a collection of vintage Indian wooden blocks in my box of treasures. I wanted to do a quick design to liven up this plain linen cushion cover and Blake & Taylor Chalk Furniture Paint. I only had 30 minutes spare to do this project so I decided to use my mini blocks to print with to make it quick and easy. Materials Blake & Taylor Chalk Furniture Paint (I chose colour Toulouse) Small artists brush Wooden blocks Old [...]

An old quilt and traditional technique brings this cushion project to life!

It’s finally finished!  A couple of weeks ago I gave a sneak peek of a cushion top I was working on using Sashiko and Boro methods of Japanese stitching.  I had been working on this piece for months here and there.  Thus, finally sitting back and enjoying the completed project gave me the truest sense of satisfaction.     The project went from this flat 60x60cm decorated and stitched piece of fabric to a 3D cushion wonder.  Thanks to my girls in my workroom.  They used one of those loosely filled duck-feather inserts to create a well-formed pillow with [...]
