Vintage Dining Chairs Re-Imagined
It has been a short while since I have been able to share something exciting from the design bench here at Blake & Taylor. This is not for a lack of thrilling things in the works. There has been so much hustle and bustle in the air since I returned from my trip to Paris and Rome. I just have not had a moment to sit down and tell you all about it!
This past week I have been deeply invested in a painting project. We had found 6 fantastic vintage chairs, all from the same set – a major feat in itself! The chairs date back to the 1920’s and have this amazing twisted, carved detail on the back rail.
The original chairs had hand stitched tapestry covers on the seats. They were really beautiful and would have looked great when first done, however, time and the silver fish had taken their toll and they could not be saved.
It was a sad moment when we took those first steps to strip the chairs in preparation for their new, inspired look. Especially for me, having a deep appreciation for the history of objects and especially of all the time and love that someone spent in stitching the covers. Eventually, my excitement for their transformation took over as we began to prepare the chairs for their new coat of Blake & Taylor Chalk Furniture Paint.
We were over the moon at the results of our re-imagined vintage chairs. Before and after photos let you see how wonderful and refreshed these worn old chairs now look with a coat of our Australian-made paint.
The designer fabrics I chose for the seat re-upholstery brought these chairs into a new era – and of course the textiles are 100% linen, may favourite! Choosing a monotone palette, but switching up the patterns from chair to chair gives this set just the right amount of character.
I shall continue this story next week when I can show you the vintage extension dining table that will complement these chairs. We are currently painting it with Ink Navy to match the chairs. This rich new colour in our chalk furniture paint line has been such a hit since we launched it half a year ago.
This dining suite will be for sale when it is completed so stay tuned and please send me an email if you are interested.
